Located in the Heart of Chautauqua County, the Country
House B&B is the perfect quiet and relaxing retreat.
The original
house at 4836 Hale Road was built in 1847 by the Hale family, for the
family of the county's new Superintendent of Schools, who wished to reside close
to geographical center of Chautauqua County--and within a day's buggy ride to
any school within its boundaries. Occupied by the Hale family until 1937 when
purchased and improved by Morgan Sack and later run as a successful dairy farm
by his son David, it has been home to just two families.
In August, 2000, the owner of an identical house by the
contractor Danby
built in 1848 just around the corner, offered its still-sturdy, two-story
section to the Sacks. So, with the help of a few friends and tractors, the
four-room structure came across the meadow on I-beams, and became the west wing
of The Country House.
Generations of
treasures are being brought together by Dave and Misty Sack to create six
historically inspired (but with modern comforts) sleeping rooms and baths. Since
its opening in July, 2002, bountiful country breakfasts accompany every pampered
overnight stay. Guests linger at the long table overlooking the meadows, where
good coffee and good conversation go on and on.
In summer, the back porch rockers beckon, as well as acres
of wooded trails and a small, well-stocked beaver pond. In winter the woodstove
is stoked up, and the hearth welcomes guests in from the snowy countryside.
